Those of us who love The Great British Bake Off find a welcomed fix between series with The Great Sport Relief Bake Off. Raising money for charity, four celebrities attempt to whisk their way to success and win the coveted Star Baker apron.

This week, veteran broadcaster John Simpson joined the line up along to present his bakes at the gingham altar of the Bake Off tent.

It became immediately obvious that John Simpson is not an accomplished baker. Not that this was particularly surprising to anyone. He himself said that he’s rather be reporting under mortar fire than bake a free-form tart! Continue reading

A confession

A confession

I have a confession:

I nominated myself for the Premier Digital Awards. I didn’t tell anyone, I didn’t even mention it to The Boy until I was shortlisted.

Every part of my internal code of conduct felt awkward doing so but I gulped, filled out the form and sent it off. When the shortlist came out I confessed to The Boy to which he replied,

That’s what a bloke would do so I wouldn’t worry.’

(Do you see why I love him?!)

Why did I nominate myself? Recently I have come to the realisation that I have to take responsibility for putting myself ‘out there’. I don’t want to look back at my life and see myself constantly sitting on the sidelines waiting for someone else to pick me for the team. Continue reading

Born 500 years ago, Teresa of Ávila can certainly be said to have been ahead of her time. As a reformer of the Carmelite order and mystic, she had a significant amount of influence within her own religious community and her order as a whole. Not bad for a motherless girl from Ávila.
